Tour 1:
June 16 - June 29
Uppland - Gastrikland
Proposed Itinerary:
Our trip begins north of Stockholm, in the ancient city of
Uppsala, where we will stay in rooms connected with an
old manor house.    Excursions will include Gamla
Upsala, the grand Cathedral in Uppsala, and many
other local sights.   In Björklinge, north of town, there
will be a week-long gathering of folk musicians trying to
earn the coveted Zorn medal in bronze or silver.   We
will be able to attend concerts with some of these
musicians.
On Saturday the wedding of the decade will be held in
Stockholm, as Crownprincess Victoria gets married.
We can be there to watch the spectacle, as the royal
couple greets the crowds from a boat sailing around
the city.  The wedding will be attended by the crowned
heads of Europe, as well as officials from nearly every
country on Earth.
Sunday is the day of music at the Nyckelharpa festival
in Österbybruk.  Hundreds of fiddlers and nyckelharpa
players will be attending, playing in a huge procession
and concert, and jamming all over the grounds of
Österby's historic steel foundry and manor house.
The next few days will find us touring both Uppland and
neighboring Gästrikland as we move to a beguiling
bed-and-breakfast house near Storvik.
Excursions can go to the home of Carl Larsson,
Sweden´s most beloved painter, as well as to a
reconstructed Viking village, and many other sights.
The weekend is the celebration of Midsommar, the
longest day of the year.    We will attend the huge
celebration and raising of the Midsummer pole at
Högbo Bruk, and may attend some more intimate
celebrations with local musicians and folkdancers, as
well.
The full moon at Midsommar insures the best
atmosphere for learning about the legends of the
supernatural around this time, and we may even go on
a midnight hunt for Näcken, the musical spirit of the
night.
The tour will end after visits to musicians, artisans,
and others who contribute to the folk culture of the
region.
