Tour 2: June 30 - July 13 Hälsingland - Dalarna
|
Proposed Itinerary:
From Stockholm we will drive up the Baltic coast to the
old fishing town of Hudiksvall, in northern Hälsingland.
Using a restored old hotel as our base, we will take
excursions around the region, visiting historical sites,
museums, and meeting musicians and dancers.
The weekend will bring two days of music festivals,
culminating in the Delsbostämma, the oldest festival of
its kind in Sweden. We can watch the traditional
churchboats bring attendees to the traditional church
service that opens the ceremonies, and take part in the
musical procession from the church to the festival
grounds. The day will be full of tradition, of music,
and of dancing.
From Hälsingland we will travel south to Dalarna, the
most traditional of the provinces of Sweden. We will
stay on a farm near lake Siljan, and have excursions all
around the area. We can visit a factory where the
famous Mora knives are made, and see how the iconic
Dala horses are handmade and painted. One day may
be taken with a steamboat cruise across the lake. We
will visit the museum at the home of Anders Zorn, the
impressionist painter who helped keep the old traditions
of Sweden from being lost. On Wednesday we will
attend Sweden's largest fiddle festival, at Bingsjö.
Among thousands of attendees, we will mix with
musicians of all sorts and abilities - we will hear
concerts, dance the night away, and be among musical
jamming on a night when darkness never falls.
Before heading back to Stockholm, we can visit the
home of Sweden's beloved painter of 100 years ago,
Carl Larsson. The last day will be spent touring and
shopping in the capital city.
